Why General Transit Predictions DON’T WORK: How to Judge Transits in Your Chart

The Way Transiting Planets Affect Your Life Is NOT One Size Fits All

First: Due to factors like distance from planet Sun and their rotation speed all planets have a different duration in which they complete their journey in one sign and move to other sign. This is known as the transit period. For your reference I have listed the transit period for each planet’s. (I have not considered retrograde motion for this article)

1. Sun:  stays in one zodiac for one month and move to another sign other on the 15th day of every month.

2. Moon: Moon goes through all twelve signs in about 28 days which means it takes roughly between 2.5 – 2.8 days in each sign.

3. Mercury: Mercury transits is complicated because it goes into retrograde motion quite often. Mercury takes around 1 year to travel through all 12 Zodiac signs. But its stay in a particular sign ranges from 14 to 30 days.

4. Venus: Just like Mercury, Venus transits duration in a particular sign is not fixed, generally Venus stays for 23 days to a little over 2 months in a sign.

5. Mars: Mars takes about 2 years to travel through all the Zodiac signs and stays in a particular sign for about 1.5 months. But sometimes Mars transit can become unusual like the recent Mars transit in Capricorn where Mars stuck around for 6 months!

5. Jupiter: Wise Jupiter takes about 12 years to travel through all 12 Zodiac signs which means Jupiter stays in a single sign for 1 year.

7. Saturn: Slow moving Saturn takes around 29.5 years to travel through all 12 Zodiac signs which means Saturn transits a single sign for 2.5 years.

8. Rahu and Ketu: These two ALWAYS move in a retrograde motion and take approximately 1.5 years to travel through each Zodiac sign.

These cycles are the foundation of astrology and understanding them will help complete the picture as you move forward in the reading.

Second: It’s vitally important to read transits through the Ascendant chart, I am not saying you should not consider Moon chart but always give more weight to the ascendant chart. If you don’t know your exact birth time then Moon is Okay. The main reason for this is because dasha must be considered from the Ascendant. Dasha and transit work together (so why not review transits from the Ascendant as well). Dasha determines how transits will give results. Keep in mind NOTHING can override the results indicated in your Horoscope!

For example, suppose your rising Ascendant is Gemini and Moon sign is Libra.

If Saturn is transiting Sagittarius it’s in your 6th house. Whereas from the Moon sign Libra Saturn is transiting through the 3rd house. This would reflect different results. As an astrologer I’m sure there are a some complications concerning your 6thhouse of health despite the fact that Saturn was transiting favorably from your Moon Sign.

Steps For Judging Planetary Transits

  1. Interpret based on lordship of transiting planet. (For example: Mars transiting would affect the houses in your chart ruled by Scorpio and Aries.)

  2. Consider The General Effects Of Transit Planet. (For example: Mercury is known to effect communications.)

  3. Ashtakvarga Analysis Of Transitinting Planets

  4. Relationship Of Transiting Planet With The Dasha Lord.

Lordship Of The Transiting Planet

Let’s Continue with the example from above. During a Saturn transit in Sagittarius for Taurus Ascendant you can expect good results for the 8th house like sudden rise, gains, help from in-laws, other 8th house matters.

The 9th and 10th houses, ruled by the planet Saturn (Capricorn and Aquarius) will bring uncomfortable results. You see it is more beneficial to prepare for the weakness over their 9th and 10th houses -which will be there due to Saturn transit in 8th house. Than be concerned with the 8thhouse that Saturn is specifically travelling over. This is because the classics assert that Saturn is a positive planet (yogakaraka) for Taurus Ascendant people. Therefore, any house it transits for Taurus ascendant will bring positivity. But the natural Saturnian energy has to express itself somewhere.

Along the same lines, It’s also important to consider if the house that the planet will directly transit is auspicious specifically per the Ascendant. (6th, 8th and 12th are considered troublesome and 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th and 11th houses are considered positive).

If both lordship of the planet and the house where the planet is going to transit is auspicious then the whole transit will prove auspicious.

General Effects Of The Transiting Planet.

Here are the general effects of each planet in transit while passing through each house of the horoscope. There is a general principle that a planet in transit from the 6th, 8th or 12th house gives bad results. Additionally; Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu give good results in 3rd, 6th and 11thhouses and troublesome results in all the other houses unless they are a yogakaraka for the Ascendant in question.

Now that you have a good idea on how to read Transits specific to your natal chart. Let’s review the most important and often overlooked detail regarding how planetary transits will bring about events specific to your natal alignment.

Ashtakvarga Analysis Of Transiting Planets

Ashtakvarga is a system where auspicious effects of a planet are measured from each other. Each planet has a certain number of benefic points (bindus) available for them to distribute to other signs which correlate to different houses depending on the Ascendant lord in a natal chart. For your reference I have listed the maximum number of points each planet can distribute:

Jupiter distributes 56

Mercury distributes 54

Venus distributes 52

Moon distributes 49

Sun distributes 48

Mars distributes 39

Saturn distributes 39

Houses, that receive 28 points are considered average. Houses which receive more or less than 28 points are significant. The greater distance from 28 points a house receives in either direction makes that house very significant in the chart (in other words, extremely high or extremely low points). Planets delivering 6, 7, or 8 bindus to one house give great benefic results when transiting over that house. Kakshaya Slot should also be considered when reviewing planetary transit results. But it is too complicated to explain here. If you are interested in a personal consultation feel free to contact me.

Relationship Of Transiting Planet With The Dasha Lord Finally, after completing steps 1-3 it’s time to make a connection with the running dasha.

For Example if Jupiter is transiting Libra in the 8th house of Pisces Ascendant. Generally natives are considered weak and this is not supportive for a rise in life.

BUT the during next Jupiter transit the sign of Scorpio is over the natives 9th house aspecting the ascendant via its 5th aspect. Thus the native will have a high time when Jupiter is in Scorpio.

Now lets bring it all together. Suppose there are two people with Aries rising where one is married and another one is not and current transit of Jupiter is over their 7th house:

The married person’s horoscope reflects a bad marriage life. Yet, so far the marriage has gone well. However, the horoscope WILL deliver its results – some difficulty related to the partner has to happen and here Jupiter’s transit can ignite the fire. Especially, if Jupiter is giving 0 - 4 bindus to the 7thhouse.

On the other hand, the unmarried person will experience Jupiters transit differently. Perhaps, he or she will get married provided the Dasha is consistent with marriage.

In Conclusion

The interpretation of transits in a Horoscope change due to the condition of the horoscope. Moreover, transits work to assist the dasha currently running in a natives life. To learn more about the Dasha you are currently running read.

Please oh pretty please, avoid getting frustrated when the results predicted in one size fits all transit forecasts fall short! Transits simply support the dasha cycle and help us narrow down the timing of events. I sincerely hope this was helpful for you.

As always best of luck to you and all that you do!
